Who the heck is
“Maybe?”
Me! Maybe is a nickname of sorts, taken from a Taoist proverb about non-judgement:
Once there was an old farmer in a small village. One day, his horse ran away. “Such bad luck,” his neighbors all said sympathetically.
“Maybe,” the farmer replied.
The next morning the horse returned, bringing along three other wild horses. “How wonderful!” the neighbors exclaimed.
“Maybe,” replied the old man.
The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown off, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy.
“Maybe,” answered the farmer.
The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men for the army. Seeing the son’s broken leg, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.
“Maybe,” said the farmer.
The name Maybe serves as a reminder that life can be a lot easier when we spend less time labeling things as “good” or “bad,” and instead learn to accept them as they are. Since no one knows what might happen next, and nothing lasts forever, who are we to judge the present moment? Besides, with “Maybe,” the possibilities are endless! 😜
